Snood, Neck Warmer or Running Hood: Which Should You Choose?

When the wind picks up on a winter run or training session, your neck and head are among the first places you feel it. Snoods, neck warmers and running hoods all help, but they work in slightly different ways. Here's how to pick the right one.

Snood and neck warmer

A snood is a tube of fabric you pull over your head to sit around your neck. Many, like the Slazenger Neck Warmer Snood, are seamless and can be worn in several ways: around the neck, pulled up over the chin, or folded as a headband.

Best for: training, warm-ups, cold commutes and walks. It's easy to pull up or down as you warm up, and it packs into a pocket.

Good to know: many football leagues don't allow snoods during matches, so check your league rules before match day.

Running hood

A running hood covers more of your head and neck in one piece. The Nike Therma-FIT Sphere Hood uses Therma-FIT fabric to help manage body heat, wicks sweat, and has a ponytail opening so long hair stays secured.

Best for: cold, windy runs and early morning or evening sessions when you want your head and ears covered as well as your neck.

How to choose

  • Want flexibility? Choose a snood. It adapts to conditions and works for more activities.
  • Running in properly cold weather? A hood gives more coverage.
  • Hate overheating? A snood is easier to adjust mid-session.
  • Long hair? A hood with a ponytail opening keeps things comfortable.

Complete your winter layers

Pair your snood or hood with gloves that let you use your phone, such as the Karrimor Women's Running Gloves or Under Armour Men's Storm Run Liner Gloves, and a long sleeve base layer underneath.
